Toshikazu GOTO & Fumiko IKEDA : gift_lab GARAGE
“We’ve attempted the dual local life. We hope this will extend our future possibilities.”
gift_lab is the design unit organized by Toshikazu Goto and Fumiko IKEDA who produce business and private space designs, custom-made furniture, and take part in design events and so on. They both previously worked at IDEE, which is one of Japan’s famous brands that proposes lifestyles through producing interior and custom-made furniture. Together they opened the gallery shop and design office “gift_lab” in Ebisu, and in 2014 they moved to Kiyosumi-Shirakawa.
“Through the planning and execution of art exhibitions and talk events with creators such as artists, designers, and musicians, we try to connect to each other and our neighbors, and find new opportunities.” The art project Central East Tokyo is an opportunity for them to experience community regeneration. After that, they opened the cafe and guesthouse by fate in Matsudai, Niigata which is known as the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field area. Nowadays, they stay in Niigata for 2 weeks and in Tokyo for 2 weeks a month. What do they see through from this dual life? What insights can they share with us about the changes?
